Since 1989, the Minnesota Association for Guardianship and Conservatorship (MAGiC), a non-profit organization, has dedicated itself to providing education on appropriate guardianship and conservatorship. To date, MAGiC boasts over 150 members from Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Members range from attorneys to long-term care providers.
Celebrating 26 Years of MAGiC
MAGiC has put on educational and inspiring conferences for members and non-members alike since 1989. This year the organization celebrated its 26th annual conference in Maple Grove, Minnesota on October 2. This much-anticipated event focused on quality substitute decision making for vulnerable individuals.
Keynote speaker Sean Burke gave his educational presentation on “Person Centered Guardianship: Re-Thinking Alternative and Substitute Decision Making in Minnesota.” In this keynote address, Burke discussed the advancement of person-centered services in the healthcare industry as well as the integration of seniors and individuals with disabilities into the community. 
Noting the need to incorporate person-centered planning into alternative decision making, Burke presented how to:
- Identify and communicate the fundamentals of person-centered guardianship
- Recognize the challenges of incorporating these principles
- Overcome these challenges and include person-centered planning in your practice
The second session discussed important financial exploitation cases and navigated attendees through the investigation process.
Later, conference-goers broke out into focused sessions including presentations on less restrictive options to guardianship and the person-centered approach to guardian and conservator appointment.
